We are delighted to announce that Liz Dalgetty has achieved an accredited qualification that recognises a high standard of care for vulnerable clients. The accreditation was developed to allow the Court of Protection to appoint an Accredited Legal Representative ( ‘ALR’) to ensure that vulnerable people who lack capacity have representation in welfare related Court of Protection proceedings.

Downs has announced official sponsorship of Cobham Area Foodbank to help towards the cost of replacing the Foodbank’s van, which is used to collect food from donation points in the local churches and supermarkets, to take it to and from the Foodbank’s warehouse, ready to be distributed at the Foodbank’s distribution centre.

Surrey-based law firm, Downs Solicitors, have appointed David Seals as its new Head of Employment taking over from Matthew Kilgannon who will be leaving the firm shortly. David has been a partner at Downs for 8 years and will lead a highly experienced team including solicitors Keith Potter, Emily Kidd and Nicola O’Dwyer. Nicola has also recently been promoted to Senior Associate and will continue the excellent work she has been doing as a director of EmployLaw, a subsidiary of Downs providing a subscription employment legal helpline service for clients.

Downs are delighted to have the opportunity to contribute to Godalming-based Scout, Ethan Glen’s fundraising efforts. Ethan is one of three Scouts from Godalming who have been selected to attend the 2019 World Scout Jamboree in the USA. So far he has raised about £600 offline so still has a way to go to reach his target. However, he has a few big fundraising actvities planned for the next six months - sponsored Munro walk (big mountains), a quiz night and a school mufti day. The jamboree is a gathering of scouts from all over the world, who meet up and learn about each other's culture and language ... and have lots of outdoor adventures! It happens once every four years and this time is in West Virginia, America. Ethan said “My fundraising efforts will help Scouts from less developed countries also attend the Jamboree. I will stay with a Scouting family in the USA, Canada or Mexico, to experience life in a different country and support their local community projects.

The Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry in the UK celebrated the New Year with a reception at Drapers’ Hall on 10 January 2018 for its members. Over 500 guests attended with guest speaker Ambassador Tsuruoka of Japan giving his thoughts on 2017 and the year ahead.

Solicitors, Madeleine James and Simone Horrobin, who are based in our Godalming office, were recently invited by the Rt Hon Maria Miller MP, conservative MP for Basingstoke, to a talk by the Chief Constable of Hampshire Police, Olivia Pinkney. Olivia is the first woman to be appointed to this role and she spoke about her journey through the ranks to the post of Chief Constable. She also talked about the challenges of encouraging more women into senior roles within the police.

Downs Solicitors' Residential Conveyancing team has been crowned the Best Small Conveyancing Firm (South) in the 2017 Law Firm Services Awards. They beat off stiff competition from last year's winners, A V Rillo, who were also voted No. 1 Conveyancing Firm in the country by the Sunday Times in 2015. The awards took place at the Vox Centre, Resorts World, NEC Birmingham on Wednesday 20 September.

On 30 August, Senior Partner, Chris Millar, Liz Dalgetty, William Edwards and Simone Horrobin hosted a delegation of Japanese MPs from the Osaka Prefectural Assembly and the legal attaché of the Embassy of Japan at the National Liberal Club in London. Due to Japan’s ageing population, the delegation were particularly interested in the issue of mental capacity in seniors in the UK. This is one of Liz Dalgetty’s specialist areas and she was able to provide the MPs with a presentation on the topic followed by a Q&A session.

Surrey is known to be one of the counties with the most woodland in the whole of the UK. It also has a large number of hills, some of them very steep, so it is no wonder that it is one of the favourite destinations of avid cyclists who want to test both their mental stamina and their legs!

Downs were delighted to be the main sponsor of this year's Betchworth Park Golf Club Pro-Am. The Pro Am is a Southern Region PGA event that has been running for over 17 years and regularly atttacts up to 200 players making it one of the largest team events run by the South Region PGA. The event is a great way to raise money for the Captains' charity which this year is Winston's Wish.

The Downs Solicitors Mens Open Race was won by "Franks A Million" which is owned by the Turner Family and trained by Edward Turner. The winning jockey was Rupert Stearn.
