Dec 2025

Making a will is probably one of the most important things you can do to protect your loved ones and plan for the future. It’s one of many reasons why we have proudly supported the Make a Will scheme in aid of Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care – and we were delighted to take part again this year.

Why is making a will so important?

Despite its importance, many people still do not have a valid will in place. In fact, according to latest statistics from the National Wills Report, published by the National Will Register, 57% of men and 50% of women in the UK have made a will. Without one, your estate will be distributed according to the rules of intestacy, which may not reflect your wishes. It can also cause unnecessary stress, delays and uncertainty for your family.

It’s a great time to be considering writing or updating your will. Combining will-writing with charitable giving doesn’t just allow you to get your affairs in order through a professionally qualified solicitor, it also means you can support a vital local charity.

Having a professionally drafted will helps to ensure your assets go to the people and causes you choose, but they can also appoint guardians for young children. Plus, it can reduce the risk of disputes between family members because it can provide clarity and peace of mind for your loved ones.

Making a will and making a difference

In previous years, the Make a Will scheme ran for a limited period. This year, however, it has been available throughout the year – and Downs is pleased to have helped raise £1,000 in donations for Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care.

These donations directly support the hospice’s specialist palliative and end-of-life care, helping patients live as well as possible and supporting families during incredibly difficult times.

And, it is a cause close to our hearts. Phyllis Tuckwell Hospice Care is where one of my own loved ones, my grandmother, spent her final weeks. Their care, compassion and kindness shown to both her and our family left a lasting impression and I am so pleased to be able to give something back to them.

Seeing first-hand the difference the hospice makes is one of the reasons we are so committed to supporting this scheme and we would like to thank everyone who has taken part or supported it in any way.

We’d also love to see more people considering a will, so if you do not yet have one – or your circumstances have changed and your existing will needs updating – now is the ideal time to take action. Contact us today to see how we can help.
